September 2008: Selecting the right window treatments for your home
Hello, this is Dana Smithers
EXCITING NEWS!
Many of you have been enjoying my monthly newsletters for several years now. I have had a very busy summer launching a new company called PRES® Staging Resource Centre. This new business was created with you in mind.
PRES® Mission Statement:
To offer the most comprehensive hands-on professional staging and redesign training in Canada. To provide the tools necessary to sell homes confidently and competitively in today's market place. To provide the skills to create homes of distinction and livability with the preferred resource centre for home staging and redesign.
So please, take some time and check in out. In the meantime let's get back to our Decorating 101 theme for this month.
DECORATING 101
Selecting the right WINDOW TREATMENTS for your home.
The key to selecting the right window treatments for your home is based on 2 things:
- Your Decorating Style
- The Function of the window treatment
Choosing WINDOW TREATMENTS for LIVING:
By now you know what your decorating style is. You are traditional, country, contemporary or eclectic. You prefer either a formal or informal (casual) atmosphere.
Traditional: think layers and layers of hard and soft window coverings; lots of drama with soft draperies puddling on the floor; lined silks or brocaded draperies that are pinch pleated on heavy gilded looking rods give this style it's sophisticated look
Country: think simple and organic fabrics with wood poles and earthy tones; woven woods are popular; roman shades in plaids or stripes or floral are a nice touch
Contemporary: clean and sleek; simple designs; brushed nickel or wrought iron poles with grommet draperies or side panel; no fuss, no frills here; 2" faux wood blinds in white keep the look simple and clean; side panels in a microfiber work well
Eclectic: a combination of any two of the styles with one more dominant
TIP: To determine the function of the window treatment think about what you want it for. Is for privacy? Is it for sun protection? Is it for aesthetics only? If you have a hard window treatment such as blinds will you need to pull them up? If you pull them up will the stack at the top be in the way? If you have a sliding glass door remember you have to open and close it. Ask your supplier to explain what the benefits of each type of window treatment offer.
Choosing WINDOW TREATMENTS for SELLING:
While we are concerned about the 'style' of your home for selling we are not so concerned about whether or not it goes with your personal belongings.
Keep the style simple. A great look for contemporary homes and if you are updating your home is the attractive 2" faux wood blind in white to go with your trim colour. Decorative side panels can add some colour and texture (warmth) to your windows and keep within your budget.
Having all your outside window treatments in the same colour creates the best 'first impression' for potential buyers. You want your home to look well cared for and be attractive and window treatments play a key role in creating that look.
TIP: To determine the right window treatment for selling use the golden rule of selling 'Less is More'. Keep in mind your target market i.e. potential buyer and find the application that will work best.

Staging Training Home Client Testimonial:
"Thank you so much to you and your students for all your hard work and for achieving the results that you did. I am very happy with the way the rooms looked, and I wouldn't have ever thought of staging it the way that you did. It really opened up the rooms and made the space feel roomier. It takes a special creative eye to make effective changes to the appearance of a room. I wish you all success in your future careers, and again thank-you for your help. I'm amazed at the difference it can make!
Now I just have to get that sold sign up and I will be looking to hire you to set up my new home. I truly believe that staging makes a huge difference and I will be spreading the word!
Best Regards,
Janet ~ Delta BC
